A shorter bar must lose length somewhere
Total length is easy to advertise, but it does not tell you what was shortened. Removing length from the grip section reduces the distance between sleeve shoulders. Removing it from the loading ends reduces the space available for plates and collars. Either can be a useful design; the mistake is expecting a compact bar to preserve every dimension of a longer one.
Rogue's C-70S specifications illustrate a compact bar with a 52-inch distance between sleeves and 8.875-inch loadable sleeves. Its C-70 instead has a shorter 43-inch interior span and 12-inch sleeves. Similar names conceal a consequential difference.
Inside shoulder distance is the fit measurement
If you use a rack, verify the bar-to-J-cup fit before trading central shaft length for longer sleeves. That separate check covers support contact, sleeve-shoulder interference and centering margin. Here, the buying decision is which dimension you can afford to shorten: the central span, the loading ends, or neither.
Usable sleeve length becomes a plate budget
Measure from the sleeve shoulder to the end of the usable loading surface, then reserve the length needed to fully engage your collar. Add the thicknesses of the plates intended for one side. Do not divide the full bar length by two or count the raised shoulder as loading space.
For an illustrative sleeve with 9 inches available and a collar requiring 1.5 inches, the plate budget is 7.5 inches. Three plates each 2.4 inches thick consume 7.2 inches; a fourth will not fit. That is a dimensional example only, not permission to load any particular bar to the resulting weight.

Leave working space for your hands
Plate changes need clearance beyond the unloaded bar's footprint. You must align the bore, slide each plate along the sleeve, and secure the collar without striking a nearby object. A bar that can lie between two walls may still be frustrating to load there. Consider your largest plate's size and the stance you use while lifting it onto the sleeve.
Also check whether the fully loaded bar can be moved through its intended exercise path. This is a focused equipment-clearance check. A compact bar does not automatically make every movement suitable wherever the bar can be stored.
Decide which compromise you can accept
Choose shortened sleeves when preserving the central span is necessary and your planned plate stack fits comfortably. Choose a shorter central shaft only when your exercises and support arrangement are explicitly compatible with it. If both constraints matter, thinner plates may solve the loading problem more directly than changing bar dimensions again.
Before ordering, save a simple dimension record with total length, interior span, sleeve length, collar allowance, and planned plate stack. Ask for missing figures rather than estimating from product images. A few verified measurements prevent buying a bar that is compact in the wrong place.
