Identify the existing floor precisely
Find the original product name, finish, installation type, and care guide. Solid wood, engineered wood, laminate, sheet vinyl, and floating vinyl planks are not interchangeable substrates. A recommendation that applies to one may not apply to another. If the original material is unknown, ask the property owner or flooring professional rather than relying on appearance.
Take photographs of the uncovered floor before installing anything. Record existing dents, discoloration, and gaps. The purpose is practical: later inspection can then distinguish a new problem from an old mark that was hidden by equipment.
Ask two manufacturers a specific question
Describe the proposed mat or flooring, its backing material, the intended fastening, and the equipment that will sit on it. Ask the existing-floor maker whether direct contact is allowed and whether it affects the warranty. Ask the gym-floor maker whether that exact substrate is approved. A broad product claim about protecting floors is not the same as compatibility with a specific finish.

Avoid inventing an underlay system
A layer of cloth, plastic, foam, or plywood is not automatically a safe barrier. It can alter grip, trap moisture, concentrate loads at edges, or change how a floating floor moves. Use a separation layer only when the relevant manufacturers approve the complete arrangement, including equipment use. Do not select a layer solely because someone used it successfully on a different floor.
Similarly, do not assume double-sided tape will peel away cleanly. The adhesive, time in place, finish condition, temperature, and cleaning chemicals can affect removal. If an approved installation requires a test area, follow its method and limitations.

Consider contact pressure and access
A protective surface may reduce abrasion while still allowing indentation from narrow equipment feet. Check the equipment maker's permitted supports and the existing floor's restrictions. Keep all feet supported evenly. Do not add improvised pads under selected feet to chase a level position.
Plan how you will lift and inspect the floor later. An enormous mat pinned beneath several heavy units can make a small spill impossible to check. A more accessible arrangement may be preferable, especially in a room with drinks, exterior doors, or nearby plumbing.
Start with an inspectable layout
If the manufacturers permit the combination, begin with the smallest useful area and inspect it at the intervals they recommend. Lift the covering without dragging equipment across the finish. Check for moisture, surface change, residue, and debris that might abrade the floor. Let cleaned material dry fully before replacing it.

No. A mat does not establish a guaranteed protective limit. Contact shape, load, impact, and the floor assembly matter. Ask for a recommendation tied to the actual equipment and substrate.
Can I put plastic under rubber to prevent staining?
Only if both flooring manufacturers approve that assembly. An improvised barrier can introduce slipping or moisture problems and does not prove compatibility.
