Total cable length is not a buying measure
A cable winds through pulleys and around the machine before reaching your hands. Much of its total length is permanently occupied by that route. A long replacement cable specification therefore does not tell you how far the working handle can move. Look for cable travel, usable extension, or a manufacturer explanation tied to the outlet.
If a seller provides only cable length, ask for the maximum permitted handle travel. You should not discover the limit by pulling a cable hard into its stop. The end of travel is an operating boundary, not something to overcome with a stronger pull.
Your starting position uses some travel
For a standing exercise, you may step away from the outlet before the first repetition. That initial distance uses cable travel before the movement begins. A machine that covers the arm movement alone can still run out of range once the user stands in the intended position.
Sketch the start and finish positions relative to the outlet. For an illustrative exercise, stepping out 24 inches and then needing another 36 inches of handle excursion requires at least the relevant combined extension in that cable geometry. Treat the example as a planning method, not a universal 60-inch requirement for every exercise.
Attachment length changes the available position
A rope, a short D-handle, and a long bar place the hands at different distances from the cable end. Extra connector links can also change the resting handle position. That can help one exercise but prevent a comfortable start for another, particularly near a high or low pulley.
Do not add a chain simply because a travel problem appears. A connector can change hand position without increasing the machine's permitted cable movement. Use approved attachments, then assess the full start and finish with those exact parts.

Compare stations within the same machine

The usual 2:1 force-distance relationship allows more handle travel per unit of stack movement than 1:1, but the actual machine can still impose a shorter limit. Cable length, stops, frame geometry, and routing matter. A ratio label alone does not establish a travel dimension.
Test the limiting exercises deliberately
Choose the movements most likely to need reach: a seated row with your preferred attachment, a split-stance press after stepping forward, or a high-to-low pull from a particular stance. Use a suitable light setting and confirm the intended start position does not require slack or an already elevated stack contrary to the instructions.
At the finish, the stack and cable must remain within their normal operating range. If you cannot try the product, ask for a demonstration using your approximate reach and attachment arrangement. Buy on verified usable travel at the relevant station, not a general claim that the machine supports hundreds of exercises.
