Read the ratio as a working relationship

A pulley arrangement can trade force for distance. In an ideal 2:1 setup, lifting a selected 100 lb stack requires about 50 lb of cable tension, and pulling the handle 24 inches raises the stack about 12 inches. Friction, moving components, and acceleration mean the actual feel will not perfectly match a simple arithmetic number.

Do not divide a corrected label twice

Some machines label the selector with the physical stack mass. Others may present effective resistance or use a product-specific convention. If a manufacturer has already adjusted the printed numbers for the ratio, dividing them again understates the load. Read the manual or ask exactly what a selector marking represents.

Keep the machine model, station, and selector position in your training log. A setting marked 50 on one unit can feel different from a setting marked 50 on another for several reasons. That does not automatically mean either machine is defective or its printed number is dishonest.

One machine can have more than one ratio

A functional trainer trolley and a lat-pulldown outlet may use different cable paths. REP's Adonis Cable Tower is an example with a 2:1 adjustable trolley and 1:1 lat/low-row functions. The weight stack alone therefore does not describe the resistance at every outlet.

When comparing machines, create a row for each station you intend to use. Record its ratio, minimum and maximum selected load, stated handle resistance convention, and travel. A machine's single biggest advertised number can hide the limit of the outlet that matters most to you.

Counting visible pulleys will mislead you

Some pulleys merely redirect the cable; others participate in a moving system that changes the force-distance relationship. The total number of wheels visible on the frame is not the ratio. Two handles also do not establish two independent stacks or a particular effective resistance.

Use the documented cable path and operating mode. A device that links two handles may have its own instructions, and selecting both sides of a dual-stack trainer is different from splitting the output of one shared stack. Do not invent a combined rating by adding printed capacities without knowing what those numbers describe.

Compare increments as well as maximums

If the physical stack increments are 10 lb, a usual 2:1 output changes by roughly 5 lb per selector step. At a 4:1 output it would be roughly 2.5 lb, if the manufacturer uses that convention and has not already corrected the labeling. A higher ratio may offer finer changes but less handle resistance from the same stack mass.

For buying, calculate the range for your hardest and lightest planned cable exercises. Then check actual travel and attachment geometry. The best ratio is the one that covers those tasks with useful increments; neither 1:1 nor 2:1 is inherently more advanced, smoother, or better for every type of training.
