Measure the floor you will cover
Record dimensions at floor level, including skirting boards and fixed obstructions. Measure both sides of a room instead of assuming opposite walls are identical. Divide an irregular shape into rectangles, calculate each area, and add them. Exclude a fixed cabinet only if you truly plan to stop the flooring at its edge.
For example, a 10-by-12-foot rectangle is 120 square feet. A 2-by-3-foot alcove adds 6 square feet if it will be covered. Those numbers establish net area, but they do not tell you how many boxes or rolls to buy. Purchasing quantity requires another step.
Use installed tile coverage
Read whether the listed tile dimensions include interlocking tabs and whether the manufacturer states finished coverage. The overlap of puzzle edges can make a nominal measurement misleading. Draw the rows and columns. For a hypothetical two-foot installed tile in an exactly 10-by-12-foot area, a five-by-six grid uses 30 tiles before any border or expansion detail. If the room is slightly wider, the extra strip may change the order substantially.
Lay out rolls in both directions
Divide room width by roll width and round up to find the number of strips, then multiply by each strip's required length. Repeat with the room rotated. Consider where the seams will fall during exercise, not only which direction wastes less material.
In the hypothetical 10-by-12-foot room with four-foot-wide material, three 12-foot strips require 36 linear feet, or 144 square feet. Rotate the layout and three 10-foot strips require 30 linear feet, or 120 square feet. This idealized comparison excludes trimming, installation gaps and purchasing restrictions. If rolls come only in fixed lengths, work out which strips can be cut from each available roll before ordering. The lower area total is useful only if its seam positions and edge details work in the room.

Name every reason for surplus
Account separately for edge trimming, obstacles, unusable offcuts and desired replacement pieces. Then round to the selling unit. If a cut plan needs 31 tiles and the selected product is sold only in packs of six, the order is six packs, or 36 tiles. Decide whether the five surplus tiles already provide your intended spares before adding more. These are hypothetical quantities; connector patterns can prevent one spare shape from replacing every tile.
Count border and corner pieces separately when the system uses them. Convert quantity into a delivered budget
The flooring calculator is an area estimate with an allowance you enter. It does not optimize roll cuts, tile connectors, border counts or full packs. Use the actual layout above to turn its area into purchasing units, then enter those units and the current delivered quote in your home gym budget. Include fastening, transitions and preparation as separate costs.
Check the order against the room one final time, especially doors and alcoves. Save a copy of the measurements and mark which offcuts you intend to reuse. If the estimate depends on a very narrow tolerance, ask the supplier to confirm installed dimensions before placing the order. A small measurement correction is easier than matching a second batch later.

Should I add 10 percent waste to every floor?
Use it only as an initial allowance if you lack a cut plan. The final quantity should reflect actual cuts, usable offcuts, pack rounding, and desired spares. Some layouts need more and some need less.
Can I use roll area to calculate the number of rolls?
Area gives a lower bound, but strip lengths and roll width may leave unusable material. Draw the cuts and check which lengths are available before rounding the order.
