Keep resistance separate from the drivetrain

The drivetrain transfers your pedaling to the resistance mechanism; the resistance system opposes that motion. A belt drive can therefore appear on bikes using different kinds of resistance. When a listing says belt driven and magnetic, it is describing two distinct parts. Understanding that distinction makes maintenance questions clearer and prevents you from assuming that a belt label tells you how the resistance will feel or be adjusted.

Magnetic resistance: inspect the controls

Magnetic braking arrangements can use a manual knob or electronically positioned components. The word magnetic does not establish automatic app control. Schwinn lists 100 magnetic resistance levels on the IC4, for example. Schwinn IC4 specifications.

Those numbers identify settings within that product's system. They are not a universal scale that can be converted directly to another brand's numbered levels. Ask whether the display reports position, measured output or an estimate, and whether software can change the setting.

Friction resistance: include the contact part

A friction bike applies a contact brake to the rotating system. Ask where the pad is located, how it is inspected and which replacement part the manufacturer supplies. A readily serviceable pad is a different ownership proposition from a poorly documented component. Do not apply household oils or cleaners to silence a contact system; its care instructions must come from the manufacturer. Consider availability of replacement parts alongside the initial purchase price.

Air resistance: understand the fan

An air bike uses a fan whose behavior changes as it spins. Some air bikes also have moving arm handles, while a model such as Concept2's BikeErg uses a cycling layout with stationary handlebars and an adjustable damper. Ask whether the flywheel drives the pedals as it slows or whether the pedals can stop independently. This behavior is separate from whether resistance is magnetic or mechanical. Learn the emergency stopping procedure for the exact model. A showroom trial should include understanding the normal stop and dismount process, rather than only turning the resistance through its range. Shared users should receive the same explanation.

Compare the practical compromises

Air movement, contact components, bearings, belts, pedals and the floor can all contribute sound. Resist declaring one mechanism silent. Also compare dependence on electrical power, replacement parts and the adjustments required between users. A simple manual resistance knob can be an advantage if independent operation is the priority; electronically controlled resistance can matter when a specifically supported app feature is essential.

No. Manufacturers’ level numbers are not a shared resistance unit and should not be compared as ratios.

Does magnetic resistance mean no maintenance?
