Draw the machine and the person separately

The bike frame occupies one shape; the user and normal access occupy another. A narrow chassis can look ideal between a wall and a desk while leaving no comfortable way to mount or adjust it. Begin with the official dimensions, then add the clearances stated for the exact model. Do not use the dimensions of an equipment mat as a replacement for that operating area.

Use a manufacturer example to calibrate scale

Concept2 lists a 48-by-24-inch assembled footprint for the BikeErg and a 60-by-48-inch clearance area for use. The difference demonstrates why a product outline alone can understate the room required. Concept2 BikeErg specifications.

Those figures apply to that machine. A different bike can require a different layout, and a model with moving arm handles needs its own motion envelope. Add a clearly labeled operating zone for each shortlisted product in your room planner.

Choose the side used for access

Look at the normal route into the room, then decide which side people will approach. Include the room required to fit shoes into straps or clip-in pedals. If two users have different access preferences, test both. A nearby cabinet should remain usable without reaching across moving components. Leave space to operate seat adjustments rather than placing the rear of the bike against furniture that prevents the required movement.

Test each rider's actual seat and handlebar positions near the surrounding obstacles. A rearward saddle or extended handlebar can reach a wall, shelf or desk that clears the middle setting. Mark the limiting positions on the drawing so sharing the bike does not require moving the complete machine.

Check the ceiling with the intended user

The handlebars and console do not necessarily define the highest occupied point. Schwinn lists the IC4's minimum ceiling height as user height plus 20 inches. Measure below any fan, sloped ceiling or beam at the bike's actual location. Include the flooring and mat beneath the machine, because they raise the entire installation.

Place the screen without shrinking the room

If you use a separate tablet or television, position it where the user can see it without an improvised mount that blocks controls. Check whether the bike's holder fits the device and its case. Plan power and charging cables away from the access path and moving parts. A screen mounted on a swivel needs space throughout its rotation, especially when the room also serves as an office.

Rehearse moving and storage

A bike with wheels is still moved according to its manual. Confirm the lifting point and whether the floor can tolerate the route. Concept2 specifies storing the BikeErg fully assembled, so it should not be assumed to fold for a cupboard. Measure the storage location and the path to it, including door thresholds. For any other model, use only the storage orientation the manufacturer allows.

Make one layout serve the real household

Tape the operating zone on the floor, set the bike's viewing position, and open nearby doors and drawers. In a combined office or guest room, also open the bed or pull out the office chair fully. Keep shoes and accessories outside the reserved zone; a clear drawing is useful only if the room can remain arranged that way.
