The numbered lever on a Concept2 fan housing controls how much air enters the enclosure. It changes the feel of the system as the flywheel accelerates and slows. Concept2 recommends starting with a damper setting of 3–5 while focusing on technique. That is the manufacturer's starting guidance, not a claim that the same lever number produces identical drag on every rower.

Understand the monitor's different information

The Performance Monitor evaluates the flywheel's slowing behavior between strokes and uses drag factor in its calculations. The lever position is a mechanical adjustment; the drag-factor display is information about the resulting system behavior. Keeping those concepts separate helps explain why two machines can have matching lever positions while feeling different. A higher visible number does not automatically make a result more impressive or establish that the machine is being used more effectively.

Why the same lever position can vary

Concept2 identifies environmental conditions and material such as lint in the fan housing as factors affecting drag. Consequently, a setting remembered from a gym rower is not a precise calibration instruction for a home rower. If you want to understand a difference, record the actual machine and displayed drag information rather than only saying both were set to five. The observation becomes more useful when the equipment state is documented.

Do not confuse four different numbers

Damper position, drag factor, stroke rate and displayed output describe different aspects of the system. Stroke rate counts the repetition rate; it is not the fan's airflow setting. A display can show a change in one value without an equivalent change in another. When discussing the rower with support or comparing equipment behavior, name the field you mean. Saying the resistance number changed can be ambiguous if the monitor and lever are showing different information.

How to display drag factor on a PM5

Keep maintenance separate from preference
