Identify the machine independently of its monitor

Ask for the rower's model and serial label, full-frame photographs and a close view of the monitor. A PM5 can be fitted to an older machine, so the display alone does not establish the age or identity of the chassis. Find the applicable manuals and parts diagrams before arranging collection. Ask where it was stored and whether it has been exposed to damp conditions. Monitor totals can provide context but should not be treated as proof of all lifetime use, especially if the monitor has been replaced or records reset.

Inspect the frame and separation joint

Look for visible cracks, distortion, substantial corrosion and missing hardware. Check the connection used to separate and reassemble the rower according to the model's instructions. It should not depend on an improvised fastener or a workaround described only by the seller. Inspect the feet and wheels as well, particularly if the machine has been repeatedly moved. If structural condition is uncertain, obtain an appropriate assessment rather than pricing the risk as a minor cosmetic defect.

Evaluate seat travel and contact surfaces

Move the seat through its approved travel and observe the rail and rollers. Roughness, catches or visible damage deserve investigation. Confirm the user fits before concentrating on condition alone. A well-maintained rower can still have insufficient usable travel for a particular person. Inspect the chain and handle connection

Observe whether the handle returns normally and ask about any recent adjustments or replacement parts. Do not agree to test a visibly damaged connection under load. A correct part number and repair quote are more useful than a seller's estimate that a repair should be cheap.

Demonstrate the monitor and fan behavior

Check startup, buttons, display readability and the metrics relevant to your intended use. Inspect accessible battery areas for visible damage following the appropriate instructions. If app connectivity matters, verify the actual monitor's compatibility and operation. Listen for unusual scraping or irregular sound, and note fan cleanliness. Remember that damper position and drag factor are distinct; matching a remembered gym setting is not a pass-or-fail condition test.

Calculate a delivered, usable price

Add known parts, inspection or repair labor, a suitable moving arrangement and any missing accessories. Confirm whether a warranty applies to a secondhand owner rather than assuming it does. Compare the result with a new or supported refurbished machine. Use the approved separation and transport procedure when collecting, then reassemble and inspect in the intended room. The worthwhile used purchase is the one with an understood condition and manageable next steps, not merely the lowest asking price.
