Power bars and multipurpose bars can look nearly identical in a product photograph. Both are straight bars with rotating sleeves and textured gripping areas. The differences that matter are often small enough to disappear in that photograph: shaft diameter, the shape and location of the knurl, grip markings, rotation hardware and how the shaft behaves under load.
A power bar is typically designed around squat, bench press and deadlift. A multipurpose bar tries to cover a broader mix of movements. Those are useful descriptions, but manufacturers do not all make the same design choices. Read the actual specification sheet rather than assuming every power bar has one exact diameter or every multipurpose bar has a mild grip.
The best first bar is the one whose compromises you understand. It does not have to be the most specialized bar you can afford. It does have to fit your hands, your regular exercises, your plates and the room in which you will use it.
Let the last month of training set the priorities
List your regular barbell movements and how often they appear. Mark the ones for which the current bar feels unsuitable. Perhaps the shaft is hard to hold, the center knurl rubs during front-rack work, or the sleeves do not hold the desired plate stack. A specific problem provides a better buying target than the vague desire for a more advanced bar.
Someone doing squat, bench and deadlift every week should give those lifts most of the decision weight. Someone who practices cleans and uses front-rack positions regularly should account for those contact points and turnover requirements. An exercise you might try someday should not outweigh a feature that affects every present session.
For a household sharing one bar, repeat the list for both users. Starting mass and grip diameter may matter more to the second person than a more aggressive knurl preferred by the first. The goal is a useful shared implement, not a compromise chosen only around the strongest person's heaviest set.
A real specification comparison shows the tradeoffs
Rogue's 45 lb Ohio Power Bar in black zinc lists a 29 mm shaft, center knurl, powerlifting marks, bronze bushings and 16.25 inches of loadable sleeve. Rogue's stainless Ohio Bar lists a 28.5 mm shaft, no center knurl, dual marks, bushings, 20 kg mass and 16.40-inch loadable sleeves. These are model examples, not specifications for every bar in either category.
Several useful lessons follow. Both use bushings, so rotation hardware alone does not divide the categories. Their sleeve lengths are close, so the power-bar label is not the reason to expect more loading space. Their center texture and markings differ, which may matter repeatedly during actual training. Compare those dimensions directly with the alternatives in your shortlist.
The mass also differs. Twenty kilograms is approximately 44.1 lb, not exactly 45 lb. If you log work in pounds, record the actual bar mass and use it consistently. A bar's visual resemblance to the one at a commercial gym is not enough to establish that its unloaded weight is identical.
Grip is a personal requirement with several components
Shaft diameter describes the part held in the hands, not the sleeves that accept plates. A half-millimeter difference sounds small, but it changes the circumference of the grip. That does not tell you which will feel better; hand size, grip style and the exercise all contribute. If possible, try the relevant diameters with the grip you actually use.
Knurl aggressiveness is another decision. A deeper or sharper-feeling texture can be welcome for one task and uncomfortable for repeated contact in another. Read how the manufacturer describes its intended use, but do not treat aggressive as a synonym for well-made. A shared bar with moderate texture may be a better compromise than a very assertive grip selected for one person's occasional lift.
Stiffness and spin need context
With otherwise comparable construction, a thicker shaft resists bending more. Actual loaded behavior also depends on material, length, load distribution and movement. A power-bar description does not mean the shaft never bends. Likewise, a multipurpose label does not mean it will have the same spring behavior as a specialized weightlifting bar.

Sleeves rotate so the plates can move relative to the shaft. Bushings and bearings are ways of supporting that rotation, not a universal quality ladder. A long unloaded hand-spin demonstration does not establish how a bar behaves under load. For lifts involving turnover, rotation is part of the design requirement; for controlled strength work, the longest free spin is not an objective by itself.
Compare serviceability as well. Find the maker's cleaning and maintenance guidance for the exact sleeve construction and finish. A bar that needs a care routine you can realistically follow can be a better ownership choice than a technically attractive finish that you will neglect in a humid garage.

Fit the bar to the rack and plates before ordering
Verify the distance between the sleeve shoulders against the intended rack supports. Total bar length cannot answer that question because shorter bars can remove length from different places. Then check clearance at each end for loading plates and fitting collars. A rack may fit the room while the chosen bar makes one side awkward to access.
Confirm that plates and collars match the sleeve size. A shaft diameter of 28.5 or 29 mm is not the plate-opening measurement. Check specialty bars separately too; do not assume a collar fits because it worked on another bar in the room. Plate-bore compatibility is a separate check from grip diameter.
Three first-bar decisions
Mostly squat, bench and deadlift: start with power bars that match your preferred grip and documented use. Compare the center knurl, starting mass and finish before debating small numerical differences. There is little value in buying specialized rotation features for lifts that do not require them.
General strength work plus regular cleans: begin with multipurpose or appropriate training bars and inspect front-rack contact and intended lifting use. A moderate grip and suitable rotation can make the mixed routine easier to accommodate. Do not assume that every general-purpose bar is intended for repeated drops; verify its handling conditions and your plate-and-platform setup.
A shared setup with a lighter starting-load requirement: evaluate lighter and 15 kg bars before restricting the decision to full-weight power or multipurpose bars. You cannot reduce an empty bar's mass by choosing fewer plates. Solve the minimum-load problem first, then compare grip, fit and the range the bar can support.
When a second bar is justified
A second bar makes sense when it has a distinct, frequently used job: a lighter starting load for another user, different grip characteristics or a specialist movement requirement. It can also keep two stations ready if the room and routine benefit. Another nearly identical bar does less to solve a known equipment limitation.
Before adding one, record what the first bar cannot do comfortably within its instructions. If the issue is sleeve space, different plates may solve it. If the issue is garage corrosion, better care or a suitable finish may be the relevant purchase.
